Missouri Hospital Association Honors SSM DePaul Health
Center for Organ Donation Programs
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - SSM DePaul Health Center in Bridgeton was
awarded the first annual "Donate Life Award" during the Missouri Hospital
Association's 79th Annual Convention & Trade Show held Nov. 7-9 at
Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach.
The award, presented under the auspices of The Health Alliance of MidAmerica,
recognizes outstanding accomplishments and best practices that hospitals are
using to increase organ and tissue donation. The Health Alliance of MidAmerica
is an affiliation of the Kansas and Missouri hospital associations, Midwest
Transplant Network in Kansas City and Mid-America Transplant Services in
St. Louis.
The staff at SSM DePaul is committed to caring for grieving families and
approaching them at the appropriate times for organ and tissue donation.
In 2000, chaplains at SSM DePaul obtained consent from 21 families from
67 possible suitable candidates for tissue donation. This number represents
the most tissue donors from any hospital in the service region of Mid-America
Transplant Services with fewer than 500 beds and the most tissue donors ever
obtained at SSM DePaul. In addition, SSM DePaul received consent for organ
donations from five families of nine medically suitable potential organ
donors.
Also honored at the MHA convention was Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City
with a 2001 "Donate Life Award."
The Missouri Hospital Association is a not-for-profit membership association
in Jefferson City that represents more than 140 Missouri hospitals. In
addition to representation and advocacy on behalf of its membership, the
association offers continuing education programs on current health care
topics and seeks to educate the public, as well as legislative representatives,
about health care issues.
