Mid-America Transplant Services
To Relocate Headquarters To Highlands At Forest Park
“This move will centrally locate our services and position us closer to the primary transplant centers in St. Louis, including Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Saint Louis University Hospital, SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital,” says Dean Kappel, MTS President and Chief Executive Officer. “We also are able to expand our on-site clinical facilities to include three operating suites as well as laboratory space so that we can enhance not only rapid procurement of organs, but also strictly monitor quality control processes.”
MTS has two on-site operating rooms at its present facility at 1139 Olivette Executive Parkway, where it houses its more than 70-person St. Louis staff in two adjacent buildings. With the move to the Highlands, MTS will centralize its staff, expand meeting and clinical simulation facilities for educational programs and have room for further expansion.
“We have seen tremendous growth in the number of organs and tissue we procure to help save or enhance lives,” says Kappel. “2005 was a record year for MTS. In the most amazing and simplest of terms, that means almost 600 people were able to undergo an organ transplant in 2005 — nearly 100 more people than in 2004. This year, we’re on track to meet and even break the record set last year. With so many efforts under way to increase organ and tissue donations and to monitor and optimize the quality of all organs and tissue procured for transplant, it makes sense to bring our St. Louis services together in one facility that is closer to our hospital partners.”
Gray Design Group will be the architect for Highlands Plaza Three, a structural steel and concrete framed building featuring a sleek exterior of Centria metal panels and continuous banded windows. Ottolino Winters Huebner will be serve as interior architects, with St. Louis-based S.M. Wilson & Co. the general contractor.
"We are delighted to be working in partnership with MTS to create a new headquarters for them at the Highlands," said Don Land, a principal of Balke Brown. "They are a tremendous asset to our region. Their decision to relocate and make a substantial financial commitment within the City of St. Louis is a real positive reflection on their commitment to this community."
Located on the site of the old St. Louis Arena, the Highlands targets companies seeking a centrally-located, high-visibility business environment with convenient and direct interstate accessibility and free structured parking. The new office building will join the $25 million, 146,000-square-foot Highlands Plaza One Class A office building that is 100% leased. In addition to the office component, the development includes a 126-room Hampton Inn & Suites, a Krieger’s Sports Bar & Grill and the $34 million, 200-unit Lofts at the Highlands apartment homes. When complete, the Highlands will contain more than one million square feet of office and commercial space and multi-family properties.
Jerry Gidlow and Jim Smith from Trammell Crow/Krombach Partners represented MTS in the transaction. Approximately 42,000 square feet of Class A office space on the top two floors of the building, available for occupancy in January of 2008, remain. The space is being offered at $26.75/SF full service, with free surface parking.
MTS was founded in 1974. In addition to its St. Louis headquarters, it has offices in Springfield and Cape Girardeau as well as in Galatia, Ill. MTS also provides comprehensive donor family services, educational programs and is active in teaching the community about the benefits of organ and tissue donation. In addition to developing commercial and residential properties for its own and third-party accounts, Balke Brown provides property management and advisory services in Missouri and Southern Illinois. The firm oversees a portfolio of more than 30 buildings containing 3.5 million square feet of Class A office and industrial space, and multifamily properties. Balke Brown was founded in 1979.
