David Florian - Liver Recipient

David Florian, a 35-year-old computer professional, would often swim after work at the YMCA. One day as he swam, he felt a sharp pain in his stomach. He thought it was indigestion, but when it did not go away, he went to the emergency room. Eventually, doctors told David that he had sclerosis, a disease that destroys the liver.

In August 1996, David was added to the waiting list for a new liver. Doctors told him he might wait a year or longer. There was no guarantee that a match would be made in time to save David's life. In March 1997, David's wait ended. He received the liver of a 20-year-old man who had died in an ATV accident. The successful liver transplant was performed at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Today, David's health is back to normal.

Last year, 4,012 people received a liver transplant. However, 8,342 patients are still waiting, and 952 died while waiting.
