The Uniform Anatomical Gift Act was proposed in 1968 by the National
Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws as a model for state
laws concerning anatomical gifts. By 1971 all states had repealed existing
laws and adopted legislation that was similar to this model act.
The following major points are addressed under the UAGA; specifically
at each state level:
Definitions
Making, amending, revoking and refusing to make anatomical gifts
by an individual
Making, revoking, and objecting to anatomical gifts by others
Authorization by the coroner/medical examiner or local public health official
Routine inquiry and required request: search and notification
Persons who may become donees; purposes for which anatomical gifts may be made
Delivery of document of gift
Rights and duties at death
Coordination of procurement and use
Sale or purchase of parts prohibited
Examination, autopsy, liability
