What is Mid-America Transplant Services (MTS)?
MTS is a vital link in the transplant process. Our role is to facilitate
the donation process from working with the donor families to the placement
of the organs for transplant and finally the recovery of the organs in
the operating room and transporting to awaiting recipients. MTS is unique from many other Organ Procurement Organizations in that we have a fully functional eye and tissue bank, Mid-America Eye and Tissue Bank. We also have our own operating room for organ and tissue procurement. In addition to the actual donation and transplant
process, MTS also provides education to hospital personnel about making
referrals of potential donors and education to the public about the
importance of making the lifesaving decision to donate and sharing
that decision with your family.
What is an OPO?
The acronym OPO stands for Organ Procurement Organization. OPOs are
responsible for the organ donation systems in hospitals within their
service areas. Services that the OPO provides include both public
and professional education and the medical management of potential
donors.
Who owns MTS?
Mid-America Transplant Services is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation
which is operated under the direction of a community board of directors.
The MTS board of directors includes representatives from donor families,
physicians, hospital administrators, and business leaders.
How is MTS funded?
The operating funds for MTS come from acquisition fees charged to
hospitals that perform transplants. Medicare covers the cost for
kidney transplants.
