About Our Organization

For 35 years, Mid-America Transplant Services (MTS) has served as the regional organ and tissue procurement organization for eastern Missouri, southern Illinois, and northeast Arkansas, serving 4.3 million people in 84 counties. From our founding goal to assist in the coordination of kidney donations, we have grown to become a multi-faceted organization dedicated to saving lives and enhancing the quality of all donated organs and tissues currently available for transplant. Located in Saint Louis, Missouri, MTS is one of 58 federally designated organizations of its kind in the United States.

MTS’s primary service offering is to facilitate and coordinate the organ and tissue donation process. With a mission to save lives through excellence in organ and tissue donation, we have been at the forefront of enhancing the quality of organs and tissue for transplant and a leader in eye bank services. Throughout our history, we have relentlessly pursued our core values of compassion, quality, teamwork, and honesty to create a positive donation experience for Donor Families, which is at the heart of what matters most to MTS.

Incorporated in the State of Missouri, MTS is a private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3). A voluntary, community-based Board of Directors sets policy for MTS and is composed of hospital executives, physicians, Donor Family members, and other disciplines, including ethics, religion, and law. The Chief Executive Officer, Dean F. Kappel directs a leadership team composed of the Chief Operating Officer, directors, and managers.  MTS is staffed by more than 100 employees including nurses, medical technicians, triage coordinators, bereavement counselors, community relations, and support staff.    For more information on the services we provide, visit the Services Provided section of this web site.

To fulfill our mission, we work closely with the four transplant centers and over 110 donor hospitals located within our service area:
